International shipment planning

What should you know in order to plan an international shipment?

It is not enough to know the address of the consignee and the weight of the cargo at the time of dispatch. There are a number of other parameters necessary for the proper arrangement of the transportation.

When the goods are delivered to another country, the place of departure and the place of delivery are indicated in English in accordance with the documents to be cleared by customs. Invoice plays an important role for customs. It is a document proving the fact of a purchase/sale transaction. Invoice is issued from the seller in the name of the buyer of the goods. The document specifies the type of goods, the number of items and their weight, the value, the terms of delivery, the seller and the buyer. Invoice is used in international shipments.

In case of dispatch in Russia, the invoice is replaced by its equivalent invoice.

What you need to know about the cargo:

  • net weight of cargo and with the package

  • cargo dimensions

  • number and size of pallets, height of cargo on each pallet

  • if a piece cargo is being transported, the number of seats, type of packaging, dimensions and weight of each seat should be specified

  • it is necessary to know the maximum permissible loading height of the pallet according to the nature of the cargo in case of a stackable consignment

  • nature of the cargo

  • special conditions of transportation

Special attention should be paid if the goods are dangerous. The consignor is required to specify a hazard class and provide the document to the carrier, the so-called Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

It is also necessary to inform the forwarder of additional conditions of carriage, apart from route and time, this may be transit to the customs post, drawing up customs documentation, unloading at the place of delivery, place of customs control.

The forwarder is provided with a list of the cargo documents that consignor has for the purpose of verifying the missing documentation. In most cases, this person helps the client obtain the necessary papers.
